Canada's Premier Pathway to Permanent Residence

Express Entry represents Canada's most streamlined route to permanent residence for skilled professionals. This comprehensive management system evaluates candidates through the Comprehensive Ranking System, inviting the highest-scoring applicants to build their futures in Canada through three distinct federal programs.

How Express Entry Works

Express Entry operates as an online management system rather than a single immigration program. Three federal economic programs funnel through this system, allowing Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada to identify, rank, and invite candidates most likely to succeed economically in Canada.

The process follows four distinct stages. First, candidates create an Express Entry profile demonstrating their eligibility for at least one of the three programs. Second, the system assigns each profile a Comprehensive Ranking System score based on factors including age, education, work experience, and language ability. Third, IRCC conducts regular invitation rounds, selecting the highest-scoring candidates. Finally, invited candidates submit complete applications for permanent residence within 60 days.

The Three Express Entry Programs

Federal Skilled Worker Program

This program targets professionals with skilled work experience outside Canada. You must meet minimum requirements across six selection factors: education, language ability, work experience, age, arranged employment in Canada, and adaptability. A points-based assessment determines eligibility, with 67 points out of 100 required as a baseline before entering the Express Entry pool.

Eligible occupations span professional, management, and skilled technical fields classified under the National Occupational Classification system at skill levels 0, A, or B. Your work experience must be continuous, paid, and in the same occupation. At least one year of full-time work (or equivalent part-time) within the last ten years qualifies you for consideration.

Canadian Experience Class

Already working or studying in Canada? The Canadian Experience Class provides a direct path to permanent residence for individuals with Canadian work experience. You need at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada within the previous three years, obtained while on valid temporary resident status with work authorization.

This program recognizes that Canadian work experience demonstrates your ability to integrate economically and socially. No points grid applies—instead, you must simply meet the minimum requirements and achieve a competitive Comprehensive Ranking System score to receive an invitation.

Federal Skilled Trades Program

Skilled tradespeople in eligible occupations can immigrate through this specialized program. Requirements include at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the past five years, meeting job requirements for that trade as described in the National Occupational Classification, and either a valid job offer or a certificate of qualification from a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.

Eligible trades include industrial, electrical, and construction trades, maintenance and equipment operation trades, supervisors in natural resources and related production, processing and manufacturing supervisors, chefs and cooks, and butchers and bakers. Language requirements are lower than other programs but remain mandatory.

Comprehensive Ranking System Explained

The CRS awards points across four main components totaling 1,200 possible points. Core human capital factors (age, education, official language proficiency, and Canadian work experience) can earn you up to 500 points as a single applicant or 460 points if you have a spouse or common-law partner accompanying you.

Spouse or common-law partner factors add up to 40 points for their education, language skills, and Canadian work experience. Skill transferability factors recognize synergies between education and work experience, education and language ability, and foreign work experience combined with Canadian work experience or certificate of qualification in a trade, awarding up to 100 points.

Additional points provide significant boosts: 50 or 200 points for a provincial nomination, 50 or 200 points for arranged employment, 15 to 30 points for Canadian education credentials, 15 to 30 points for French language proficiency, and 15 points for Canadian siblings.

Provincial Nominee Programs and Express Entry

Many provinces and territories operate enhanced nomination streams that work directly with Express Entry. A provincial nomination through these streams adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an invitation to apply in the next draw.

Each province sets its own criteria within federal guidelines, often targeting specific occupations in demand locally or graduates from provincial institutions. Some provinces allow you to create an Express Entry profile first, then notify the province of your interest. Others require you to apply to the province directly, which then nominates you to enter the Express Entry pool with additional points.

Required Documentation

When invited to apply, you must provide comprehensive documentation within 60 days:

  1. Language Test Results: Valid IELTS, CELPIP, or TEF scores less than two years old at the time of application submission
  2. Educational Credential Assessment: Report from designated organization confirming your foreign education's Canadian equivalency
  3. Work Experience Documentation: Reference letters from employers detailing job titles, duties, salary, and employment dates
  4. Proof of Funds: Bank statements or certificates demonstrating sufficient settlement funds for your family size (unless currently authorized to work in Canada or have a valid job offer)
  5. Police Certificates: From every country where you've lived for six months or more since turning 18
  6. Medical Examinations: From panel physicians designated by IRCC

Processing Times and Next Steps

IRCC targets six-month processing times for Express Entry applications, though actual times vary. Most applications meeting all requirements process within this timeframe. Processing begins when you submit your complete application after receiving an invitation, not when you create your Express Entry profile.

Regular Express Entry draws occur approximately every two weeks, with CRS cutoff scores fluctuating based on the candidate pool composition. Creating a strong profile early allows you to be ready when invitation rounds favor your qualifications or when provinces conduct targeted draws for specific occupations or candidates.
